Theology and Arts Institute at Memphis Theological Seminary
The Vision

Where we got our name
Olu Taiwo, Yoruban artist and theologian, describes the “return beat” as “an ontological experience of tempo . . . the space between the beats.” This beat also is the rhythm of life, the space between breaths syncopated by the silent rhythm of the heart, and the ever-so-slight pause between thoughts. The institute helps attendees develop theological insight, psalmists’ voice, and prophetic awareness of community needs. We believe the “beat” of communities’ spiritual lives is found in its art and should be expressed in its worship.

Our Vision
As a ministry of Memphis Theological Seminary, Return Beat: Syncopating Theology and the Arts Institute will be the premier vehicle for exploring and creating arts for worship and theological reflection in the mid-south.

Our Values
The institute is designed to promote artistic expression as a faithful response to God’s creation, incarnation, and gifts. Collaborative, creative, ecumenical, and interfaith works are essential values:
• Collaboration with lay and professional artists that respects scholarship, spiritual formation, and just ways of living in the world
• Creative chaos that provides space for exploring new theological and artistic expressions
• Ecumenical richness that receives gifts from the variety of Christian communions
• Interfaith work and dialogue that helps us live as good neighbors with members of other faith traditions

Dreams for the institute include providing:

  • regular community and continuing education events in theology and the arts.
  • a Doctor of Ministry degree track in theology and arts.
  • more significant course offerings for masters level degree students in theology and the arts.
  • a resource for community collaboration between artists, theologians, and leaders of the faith community.
  • short-term artists-in-residence who will help foster our learning.
  • support resident arts with scholarship money toward a ministry track in the arts.
